Nurses Seek Leadership Positions, Investment In Profession
Date Posted: 28/Feb/2020
Nurses have asked the Federal Government to value the roles they play in society by entrusting them with leadership positions. The Provost of the Lagos State College of Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health Nursing, Mrs Oyefunso Orenuga, who spoke for the group on Thursday, also urged the state government to invest more in the profession.
She stated this at the LASCON 2020 retreat which held at a hotel in Lekki. A statement said the retreat was themed, ‘Collegiate Nursing Education, Prospects, Implementation, Challenges and Way Forward.’
Orenuga, according to the statement, said the event was to prepare nurses and midwives for the journey ahead. She explained that it had been estimated that the world would need nine million more nurses and midwives to achieve universal health coverage by 2030, adding that strengthening the nursing profession would promote gender equity and contribute to economic development.
“It is our hope that government in all countries, particularly in Nigeria, will acknowledge the fact  that it is in their best interest to engage nurses in leadership positions in policy formulation and implementation if the health sector is to be adequately manned,” Orenuga said.
She appealed to the Lagos State Government to invest more in educating nurses. According to her, the state has only one college of nursing and midwifery, which cannot train enough manpower for the health institutions in Lagos.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the event by the Special Adviser on Education, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said training and retraining of members of staff would help the government achieve its goals. He enjoined the participants to reciprocate the good gestures of government, adding that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”
