Yale University, IMSUTH to Address Mental Health Issues in Southeast

Department of Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine has partnered Imo State University Teaching Hospital to integrate treatment of mental health challenges in all primary healthcare facilities in the state, as part of the move to address the menace in the country.
   
The partnership, supported by the Yale Global Mental Health Programme, Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM) International and Imo State Government, seeks to also expand the programme to other states in Nigeria, according to the President, Yale University, Prof. Peter Salovey.
   
Salovey said the sole aim of the partnership is to help Nigeria stem the tide of mental health challenges plaguing her.

Speaking at the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Lagos, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, Theddeus Iheanacho, said the university carried out a project called HAPPINESS (Health Action for Psychiatric Problems in Nigeria including Epilepsy and Substances) in Imo State and found it was almost impossible to get a mental healthcare referral in remote areas.
 
Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Imo State University (IMSU), Prof. Nkwam Uwaoma, a Clinical Psychologist, said the partnership would help address mental health challenges in the Southeast, promising the university would give full support to ensure the programme succeeds.
