Coalition Says RUTF Will Help Tackle Malnutrition
Date Posted: 14/Jan/2020
The Chairman of Maternal Newborn and Child Health Coalition, Malam Alhassan Yahaya, has commended the Federal Government for providing Ready to Use Therapeutic Food in Gombe State. Yahaya, in an interview with our correspondent in Gombe, said that about 10,000 cartons of RUTF allocated to the state would help to tackle the burden of malnutrition in Gombe State.

He said, “We will ensure that there is no diversion and that the supplement reaches the target group who are predominantly from less privileged backgrounds.” Yahaya appreciated the effort of civil society organisations, development partners and other groups advocating improved maternal and child health.

He also stressed the need for the public to focus attention on preventive measures of malnutrition. Yahaya urged nursing mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding, saying it provides the ideal food during the first six months of childbirth. “After the six months of observing exclusive breastfeeding, complementary feeding is recommended thereafter because breast milk will no longer be sufficient for the infant,” he said.

The chairman said the raw materials for the Infant and Young Child Feeding  were available within the communities.
