Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Introduction of Professional Indemnity Insurance for Nurses and Midwives

The Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria at its 50th General Meeting approved the introduction of Professional indemnity insurance for all Registered Nurses/Midwives in line with the National Health Act (NHA) Part 2, Section 11 sub-section 3 and Part 3 Section22).

Indemnity insurance is in accordance with global best practices and also forms an essential proof of belonging to a professional body. It is in the interest of the Council to ensure that Nurses who are practicing and their patients are well protected while working within the scope of their practice.

Therefore, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria is pleased to announce the introduction of indemnity insurance for all Professional Nurses and Midwives. The Council will provide opportunity for awareness and sensitization on the modalities for implementation before commencement of the scheme in 2020.

Accordingly, as from 2020, Indemnity insurance would be a legal requirement for Nurses and Midwives registration with the Council and revalidate professional license.

Implementation of the scheme would begin with successful graduates of March, 2020 Professional examination for Midwives as a requirement to meet the Council's registration standard.

A Technical Committee will be in place to guide the implementation.
