The ovation that greeted that announcement quite literally almost brought the roof of the hall down.
The WHO Director-General thanked all for allowing him to witness this all-important World Congress of Nurses. He said that he had left the G20 meeting for the Nurses Congress to demonstrate how important Nurses are in realizing the goals of WHO.
Dr. Ghebreyesus an incredibly accomplished and impactful public health advocate, spoke with much pride and endearment of the nursing body, expressing how the role of nursing shall be "amplified and promoted" as the work of W.H.O. and Nursing Now moves forward.

They account for more than half of the global health workforce and are vital for realizing the vision of universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. WHO is proud to support ICN and the Nursing Now campaign to ensure we fill this critical gap.”
Dr. Tedros spoke of how Nurses are the "bridge" of healthcare, a crucial link between the people of the community and the complex healthcare system.
He reminded Nurses that year 2020 is also the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale, and according to Dr him, "we need to celebrate people like her who have contributed greatly to humanity hence year 2020 has been declared the year of the Nurse and the Midwife.
