Address From The Office The President Of National Association Of Nigeria Nurses And Midwives (NANNM) ON The Occasion Of The 2018 World Aids Day
Date Posted: 03/Dec/2018
The 1st Day of December 2018 marks the universal day for humans to observe and bring into focus issues surrouding the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It is therefore an auspicious occasion to hit the stand with this message. As a professional association, NANNM identifies with people living with HIV/AIDS and commiserate with the loved ones of those who have died due to the HIV/Aids infection especially Our members who have fallen victim of this dreaded infection and have paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
This year's theme for World AIDS Day, which is marking Its 30th annivasary today 1st December. Is "Know Your Status". This Is a fundamental strategy to restore hope and advance succour to every one of us. the heath care service consumers and health care professionals which nursing and nurses serve as pivot.
The World Aids Day has its generis traced to the 1938 World Summit of Ministers of Health on Programmes for AIDS Prevention. Since then annually, it has become strategic for univasal commemoration led by United Nations and her sister agencies, governments and civil society to join hands to organise a focus campagn around specific themes related to aids, its prevention and action plan on its treatment and most importantly how to rally support for the victims and vulnerable populations of the world.
A critical look at this years theme centers on knowing your status- Perhaps the most fearful thing in the epidemiology of this dreaded disease has remained voluntary submission of self for HIV screening. Ironically some people do not excercise much anxiety/restraint in undertaking risky behavious as much as they dread HIV screening. HIV testing is very important to establish what an individual Status of the virus is.
The testing is the basis of knowing if an individual is habouring the HIV virus, initiating steps to care for the victim and mobilizing the person affected to accept the reality of the case. as denial always have devastating effect. This will create an avenue to aid the vitim in living with HIV to lead healthy, positive. and productive lives.
