#ICM2017: Midwives Award Winners Announced

We are delighted to present the winners of Marie Goubran, Education and Research awards. Below are the tittles and summary of their proposed research projects. 
The award that they will receive includes:-
- US$7,500 contribution towards their research project
Full sponsorship (travel inclucing cost for visa aplication, hotel accomodation, congress registration and incidentals) for the 31st ICM Triennial Congress in Toronto from 18-22 June, 2017, where they will have an opportunity to present their work.
- Opportunity to publish their research in the Internationa Journal of Childbirth (IJC)
The Marie Goubran Award Winners
A memorial award established to recognize midwives in countries with special needs and limited funding opportunities, who demonstrate similar leadership and commitment, specifically in healthy baby development.

Yoana Stancheva, Midwives Association of Bulgaria
Tittle of proposal: Stengthening Bulgarian Midwives' Autonomy by introducing Newborn Examination Skills
Summary of the research:The project is about creating a sustainable workshop to educate midwives on the basics of newborn assessment. Currently, one of the biggest issues with midwives attending births autonomously is the understanding that only neonatologists can evaluate if the newborn is healthy or not. Consequently, neonatologists have a major say on physiological births even though midwives should be the experts. Their view often alters the pace of physiological second stage. The Marie Goubran Award will help us craft a training curriculum and invite specialist midwives to educate local trainers who proceed to facilitate the newborn assessment workshop in several major Bulgarian university hospitals. Educating midwives on how to conduct proper newborn assessment is a step towards achieving a new level of autonomy for Bulgarian midwives and dispelling myths that midwives are not competent enough to be caregivers of healthy mothers and babies as well.

Kiran Mubeen, Midwives Association of Pakistan
Tittle of proposal: Capacity Building of Community Midwives of Pakistan for Helping Baby Breath (HBB)
Summary of research project: Kiran Maubeen with her co-reseachers Bushra Rehman and Farzana Adnan, through this project envision to empower community midwives to early identify signs of asphyxia and help babies breath while executing the chain of survival to prevent asphyxia related neonatal deaths. Through this pilot intervention study, the aim is to target those communities which are marginaized and yet uncovered with the professional educational intervention of HBB. This will enable midwives to act as a change agent by significantly impacting the current newborn death scenario in their communities. 
The Research Award Winners 
The purpose is to promote midwifery research that enhances and documents evidence based midwifery practice and to further develop midwifery research capacity. The award seek to support midwives to engage in resaerch and recognize midwives who have taken an active role in conducting research or dissemination thereof through conferences and other channels.

Tittle of proposal: Mejoramiento de la calidad de vida de la mujer a través del diagno'stico temprano de la endometriosis (Improvement of the women’s quality of life through early diagnosis of endometriosis)
Summary of the research: El objetivo principal de la investigación es el desarrollo de un método de diagnóstico de endometriosis no invasivo, que permita una pesquisa temprana y disminuya los costos asociados al diagnóstico actual a través de cirugía  laparoscópica. Un diagnóstico precoz tiene una alta trascendencia en la calidad de vida de la mujer y su fertilidad, ya que al conocer la presencia de la enfermedad puede buscar prontamente alternativas terapéuticas, mejorando el manejo del dolor pélvico y aportando información clave para la planificación familiar.

Tittle of proposal: Midwife-led care in low and middle income countries
Summary of the research: Implementation of evidence-based midwifery care in low- and middle-income countries has the potential to provide sustainable solutions to meet the need for quality of care in maternal and neonatal health. Rigorous research on this model of care in high-income countries shows that it is effective and that it should be offered to most women as it provides multiple benefits for childbearing women and their newborns (Sandall et al. 2016). A limited number of studies on midwife-led models of care conducted in low- and middle-income countries show promising results but lack generalizability and transferability and do not provide insight in enablers and barriers of implementation thus pointing out the need for rigorous research in the area. Therefore, the aim of this research project is to explore how midwife-led care is being implemented in selected low- and middle-income countries and what the outcomes are of this model of care. The study will also examine how this model of care has been provided and assess how it has been scaled up including facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of this model of care. Finally this study will examine whether such a model of care could be implemented or scaled-up more widely in other low- and middle-income countries.
The study will be conducted as part of a Joint-PhD programme at the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Dundee. Supervisor is Professor Caroline Homer and co-supervisors are Dr. Alison McFadden and Professor Mary Renfrew.

Tittle of proposal: Etude des avantages et inconvénients des pratiques du massage traditionnel des bébés et nourrissons en Afrique : cas du milieu "nagot" au Bénin (Study of the advantages and disadvantages of the practice of traditional massage of babies and infants in Africa: case of the "nagot" environment in Benin)
Summary of the proposal: 
Il s’agit d’une étude qui  va se focaliser sur les avantages et les inconvénients des pratiques du massage traditionnel des bébés et nourrissons au Bénin en général et particulièrement dans une région du pays.
En effet, en Afrique comme en Occident, en passant par l’Asie, les familles connaissent les bénéfices du toucher et du massage sur les nourrissons et les enfants. Seules les techniques changent. La technique du massage en Afrique en général et particulièrement au Bénin suscite quelques interrogations qui méritent qu’on s’y intéresse. Le massage a plusieurs avantages et de nombreuses études laissent entrevoir les bénéfices du massage pour les nourrissons et les enfants en bonne santé. Les études mettent en exergue quatre principales catégories d’avantages, que sont: l’interaction, la stimulation, le soulagement et la relaxation. 
La présente étude vise à montrer si:
- les familles béninoises connaissent  les contre-indications du massage chez le bébé 
- certains bébés ont-ils déjà eu des séquelles liées au massage ? Le fait de lancer le bébé en l’air ou de le secouer la tête en bas ne présente-il pas de risque pour le bébé 
- le bébé massé de façon traditionnelle subit de traumatisme ou pas

Tittle of proposal: Experience mistreatment of women during childbirth in the peri-urban areas of the Kathmandu valley: A mixed method study
Summary of the proposal: Growing evidence for the negative impact of mistreatment, disrespect and abuse in facility-based childbirth on skilled birth care utilization across a range of countries suggest mistreatment, disrespect and abuse may sometimes act as more powerful deterrents to skilled birth care utilization than other more commonly recognized deterrents such as geographic and financial obstacles. Examining women’s lived experiences with maternal health services is crucial to improve maternity care that will ensure quality maternal health care and also helps to improve access and utilisation of maternal healthcare in order to attain sustainable development goals relating to sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that women in Nepal are subjected to mistreatment during childbirth in health facilities, but limited research exists on this topic. Therefore, this study aims to explore women's lived experience relating to their facility based childbirth and its factors with the reported mistreatment during childbirth in health facilities in peri-urban areas of the Kathmandu valley.
The Education Award
As an encouragement and example for midwifery educators, the award seeks to recognize midwives who created innovative educational programs and original, easily reproducible ways of basic (pre-service) and/or post graduate (in-service) midwifery education.

Tittle of proposal: Stop Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) Active Management of 3rd stage of Labour to Save Lives of Mothers and their Babies
Summary of the proposal: The project is aims at delivering critical, practical-based education and demonstration of active management of third stage labour (AMTSL) and management of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) to Midwifery tutors to enable them to pass the contents to their students before they go to the clinical area for practice. This project will cover all Nursing and Midwifery Schools located in the Southern Tanzania Regions (Lindi and Mtwara). Ultimately, the project goal is to hep save lives of women and their newborns by preventing postpartum haemorrhage in Tanzania.

Tittle of proposal: Development of Integrated Health Posts for Adolescents by Empowerment of Collaborative Health Students: A method of implementing interprofessional Education in Communities
Summary of the proposal: Through this project, an inter-professional team of health students from midwifery, medicine, dentistry, public health, nutrition and psychology will be trained to collaborate in providing heath services to adolescents. The will then carry out a monthly program of health assessments and counselling in schools which currently have no adolescent health program. This program will therefore provide health services to an underserved community while at the same time giving the heakth students the opportunity to improve their adolescent clinical skills as well as to learn to collaborate effectively as an interprofessional team.
