SO SAD: NANNM Silent as UCH Student Nurses Suffer Oppression
Date Posted: 05/Jun/2014
We seek to bring to the notice of the general public. well meaning Nigerians and friends of Nursing (FON) of a blatant case of injustice being metted out to students of the school of nursing at the university college hospital ibadan.
Report reaching Nursingworld Nigeria from an annonymous source claims that students were at the begininning of the school session made to pay a sum of N20,000 for utilities inclusive of which was diesel expenses. The essence was to enable the school authorities fuel the generator set given to the school and hostels. According to our confidant, since the commencement of the session there is no record ever of the generator being fueled or in use for the students needs when there was power failure.
Between 27th of May and 31st of May 2014 there was power failure in the entire UCH premises, generators were switched-on for various departments and wards and even the hostel for the medical students. During this same period there was total blackout in the nursing hostels and students were made to suffer the attendant consequences and costs of this black out.
In desperation and out of frustration, In the evening of 30th of May 2014, a peaceful protest was held by the nursing students which involved no violent action as regards the blackout in their hostel alone in the whole of UCH. On Monday 2nd of June 2014, 2 letters were issued from the chief medical director of the hospital through the vice principal of the school stating an indefinite suspension of the students and the principal of the school respectively, the students union body - Nursing Students' Asociation, UCH - was also dissolved immediately.
The students were asked to vacate the hostel before 2pm of the same day.
You would recall that this is not the first of its kind of the school management taking draconian measures targeted at nurses in a bid to overwhelm them into submissiveness in the face of glaring opression. Making false allegations of these noble nurses breaking into the CMD's office and even strangulating someone is obnoxious and bizzare.
Efforts to reach the state chapter chairman of NANNM, Director of Nursing services all proved abortive as at time of writing this reporting.
