Slain Kano Nurse vaccinator died a week to wedding- NANNM
Date Posted: 15/Feb/2013

One of the slain nine polio vaccinators in Kano, Jemila Yusuf, was killed barely a week to her wedding on Saturday (tomorrow).
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja through a statement by its National President, Abdrafiu Adeniji, and Acting General Secretary, W. G. Yusuf-Badmus.
According to NANNM, the Federal and Kano State governments should “provide insurance cover for all health workers on essential services, especially those performing immunisation in troubled areas”.
The association said, “Yusuf was killed in her prime just a week before her wedding day-this Saturday – at Angwa Uku in Kano State.”
The association also said it was unfortunate that while efforts were being made to bring peace and development to all parts of Nigeria, some individuals have decided to pull back the hand of the clock by killing innocent professionals who are trained to save lives.”
While warning that there could be no development and economic growth structured on violence and crises, NANNM described the murder of the health workers on immunisation duty as primitive, condemnable and barbaric.
The association said, “Certainly, if the situation is allowed to continue, it will pull the country to stone age. NANNM is therefore calling on the Federal Government to provide armed security to all health workers on essential duties.
“It is of great concern to Nurses all around the country to note that in the process of saving lives and the future of our children through polio vaccines, nine innocent professional women have laid down their lives.
“NANNM also called on the Federal and Kano State governments to adequately compensate the families of the victims and provide insurance cover to all health workers on essential services, especially those performing immunisation in troubled areas.”
