The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Lagos State Council, has reiterated its commitment to finding a lasting solution to quackery in the health sector.
Speaking during a briefing, the Chairman of NANNM, Lagos chapter, Mr. Olurotimi Awojide, said the body was ready to invoke the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Registration Act Cap N143, laws of the Federation of Nigeria, to regulate the standards of nursing and midwifery education and practice with a view to bringing sanity to the sector.
Recalling that the association had called on the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund to stop the training of nursing assistants, he said the LSETF was not officially accredited to do so.
Awojide also said the NMCN was the only statutory legal body charged with the performance of specific functions on behalf of the government in order to ensure the delivery of safe and effective health care to the public through quality education and best practices.
He warned that if the relevant authorities failed to address the issue of illegal training of nurses and involvement of quacks, the association might decide to embark on indefinite strike.
Lamenting that quackery had caused much damage to the nursing and health profession in general, thereby leading to a high mortality rate in the country, he said that failure on the part of the government and other stakeholders to get rid of the vice might expose many Nigerians to health risks and danger.
Awojide said, “We cannot continue to take with levity, the activities of quacks in nursing and midwifery because it is affecting the profession. Quackery underrates the profession because it makes people to erroneously think that it is an all-comers affair and polluting the demand for qualified nurses.
“Nursing is a profession that adapts to ethical standards. Therefore, we condemn in strong terms the training of nursing assistants by the LSETF. This is a way of bastardising the nursing profession because it is not an institution mandated to do so.”
