Adeniji: The National Association Of Nigerian Nurses And Midwifes Is The Only Recognized Professional Body
Date Posted: 17/Nov/2017
The President, National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) Comrade Abdrafiu Adeniji, has categorically stated that any professional association for Nigerian nurses and midwives, aside NANNM, is illegal and not recognised.

Adeniji had stated that ”NANNM is the only recognised body as a professional association registered and recognised by law and regulations to coordinate nurses and midwives affairs in the country”.

This statement was made following reports about the strained relationship between NANNM and the University Graduates of Nursing Science Association (UGONSA),

“I think what is happening is that there are few people that are not satisfied about some things but instead of using the right channel to address it, they adopt that measure of criticism, which the leadership of NANNM has always seen as part of their right to express themselves.

NANNM President Adeniji further stated that concerning Registered Nurses and Midwives practising in the country there currently is no other body registered and recognised by law to either unionize Nigerian nurses nor was there any professional body recognised and registered for that purpose. On the phrase ‘graduate nurses’ Adeniji further stated that there are a whole lot of Nurses who are BSC graduates in NANNM including himself, the General Secretary with about 80% of the current leadership having the BNSc or higher qualifications in nursing.

As a trade union and a professional association, all nurses who are registered as members are always in any shape or form advised to express themselves and to go through every normal process if they want to lead the association by contesting and being a part in terms of decision making that would affect all professional and practising nurses.
