Unknown gunmen on Wednesday kidnapped the Chief Medical Director of Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki(FETHA), Ebonyi state, Dr. Emeka Onwe Ogah, the Director of Finance of the Hospital, S.N Ugama and that of administration, Chief Christopher Ogbu.
LEADERSHIP gatheed that the 3 administrators of the hospital were kidnapped along Ajokuta axis of Lokoja-Abuja express road in Kogi state at about 5pm on their way to Abuja for a meeting.
Source close to the hospital revealed that the trio were ridding on a Hilux van before their vehicle was attacked by the unknown gunmen who shot at the driver while trying to escape.
It was also gathered that the gunmen who were heavily armed immediately zoomed of with the vehicle with the occupants.
Protesing the kidnap, the Nigeria Medical Association led by its, Chairman, Dr.Austin Ikwudimma expressed regret over the constant kidnap of medical doctors in the country and urged the state Governor, Chief David Umahi and security chiefs in the state to do all within their powers to rescue the abducted victims unharmed.
According to him: “We are here to register our displeasure, to let the state government convey this message to the federal government. Ebonyi state is doing its best and it is one of the safest states in the federation but it needs to do more”.
“Federal government needs to do more on the issue of security especially as regards to Doctors whose lives have been endangered. Apart from this kidnap, our members have been robbed. Our members hav lost their vehicles, we have been intimidated and harassed.
These things are coming serial as if we are targets”. “This is why we are here to tell the federal government to improve on the security situation in the country and ensure that our members are returned to us unhurt”.
Adressing the protesters, Gov Umahi assured that the state government is doing everything possible to make sure that they are released. “I know how you people suffer sleepless nights and so on and so forth.
So, you shouldn’t be working in fear. I am directing the Special Assistant on Security to have the entire road locked down”.
“I am the Chief security officer. Today, all routes must be blocked by 6:pm. If the Neighbourhood Watch don’t want to do their work, they can go way. The CP is here, he will cooperate with our men to make sure that order is carried. Out”.
“Again, accept my apologies for what l happened. We are doing everything possible to ensure that they are released”.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, Mr. Kenneth Ugbala described the kidnap as unfortunate.
“Wqe got the news of abduction of wife of your provost and the child, the Governor suspended every official duty to ensure they were released. I thanked God that last night they were released. That of Kogi, the one that took place at Kogi, we are still tracing what happened”.
“Government will put every machinery in motion to ensure they are released unhurt and we want to assure that we are going to create more Partnership with the federal government so that with our synergy, we can achieve more results”.
