Date Posted: 16/Oct/2017
The National Association of Nigeria Nurses of Midwives {NANNM} has led an advocacy visit to the Olabisi Onabanjo University {OOU}, Ago Iwoye. The visit which was led by the state chairman of NANNM, Comrade Roseline Funmilayo Solarin and the state’s director of nursing services, Mr. Oluwatoyin Adejobi was conducted on Thursday 21st September 2017. The purpose of the meeting was to advocate for and lend support to the commencement of the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences {BNSc} programme in the institution. This became imperative in conformity with the recent nursing education reform as decided at the 2017 nursing leaders’ summit held in Kaduna state. The team was received by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Olatunde Ganiyu and supported by the deputy vice chancellor, registrar, deputy registrar corporate affairs and other management officials of the university.
The nursing team acknowledged the fact that Ogun state is blessed with OOU, a university of repute which has been producing frontline health professionals with the exception of nurses and opined that with the institution’s track record juxtaposed with the serious shortage of manpower in the field of nursing, OOU is overdue to commence production of nurses at the baccalaureate level solve the perennial problem of access to higher education by nurses in the state.
Responding, the VC acknowledged the team and appreciated the fact that nursing in the state is blessed with a leadership that is seeking for opportunities for their members. He assured the team that modalities for the commencement of the programme has been discussed and approved by the governing council of the institution. The necessary paperwork has been done and fees for the resource verification by the Nigerian University Commission have been paid and in-fact, the NUC is being expected for the visit.
He further solicited for support from the nursing team in terms of furnishing the university with information as it regards requirements for accreditation as the professional body. The VC gave more insight about the proposed programme stating that the department will be cited at the Sagamu campus of the institution considering its proximity to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital which is expected to serve as a facility for clinical postings.
The department which is expected to kick off in the 2017/2018 academic session is being targeted to be one of the strongest of the institution with adequate manpower. The VC informed the team that some staff members for the department are already on ground while others will be recruited as necessary. Also, other members of the university management’s team also lent their voice and pledged their support for the commencement and smooth running of the programme.
