NMCN Desk Officers Training Q&A: Internship Placement, Payment And NANNM Membership
Date Posted: 20/Sep/2017

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria two-day training program on the processes/operations of the Council’s web-based portal for FOCAL Persons/Desk Officers of Nursing and Midwifery Institutions and Hospitals for the North East/Central Zones with the venue at the School of Nursing, ATBUTH Bauchi ended yesterday the 19th of September 2017. For all participants who attended the event, it was a wonderful experience.

Following the last update published here on Nursingworld Nigeria yesterday, the following was put forward to the reps at the event concerning internship for nurses amonsgt other questions. Find excepts below:
Group Picture of the participants at the end of the program

Participants Question: Are nmcn workers also members of nannm because at times it seems both work like they are not fighting the same fight
Course Director: The answer to your question is an emphatic YES, we are all nannm members including registrar, some of us here are even excos at the unit nannm, and I am their secretary

PQ; Are you aware of the disparity in intern nurses placement and what exactly is the council doing to resolve this?
C.D: Yes we are aware of what was agreed upon before the commencement of internship but as at this moment it still has not been gazetted and as such we have no legal standing to fight what different hospitals are doing by placing intern nurses the way they want. But please note that once its gazetted then council can come in and rectify all this. All nurses should ensure that the right amount of pressure and support is given to nannm to ensure the right stuff is gazetted at the end of the day

‬PQ: Who exactly is qualified to go for internship
C.D: For the internship, anyone who graduated before January 2017 should disregard internship because the internship is meant to be part of training solely for BNSc nurses. On graduation a temporary license to serve for the 1yr period of internship would be issued to all graduates after which they can come for permanent registration at the end of their internship placements. Also please note that the internship is not meant for already registered BNSc nurses

‬PQ: What about the issue of central posting and payment of intern nurses
C.D: The council is already working on a plan to also adopt that for nurses. We have already made our stand known to all necessary bodies and groups that central posting cannot only be done for intern doctors, it must capture everyone as not only doctors do internship. Rest Assured that the council is already aware and working on it.
