#IND2017 Limitations In Nursing Practices: The Consequences To Nurses And The Profession At Large By Nurse Mustapha Mahmood
Date Posted: 12/May/2017
As we celebrate this years International Nurses Day in Nigeria and around the world, Nurse Mustapha Mahmoood has a few words and questions to put forward:

WHY ARE NURSES NOT LICENCED TO PRACTICE SOME PROCEDURES?
It might come as a surprise to many that some procedures like setting intravenous lines, suturing, NG tune inserteion and many of the likes are only carried out by medical doctors in our tertiary health institutions, the major question is why are nurses not allowed to?.

If you observe, most times nurses do carry out these procedures especially in A&E units of our hospitals but such procedures are still counted as Drs procedures. It would be of great imporatnce to the nurses in the country if our licence will cover these procedures so as to practice them with authority and to increase, the value of our noble profession
WHY MUST YOU CALL THE ATTENTION OF DR TO GIVE IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION ON PATIENT
Nurses as the custodians of the patients need to be allowed to give immediate medical intervention to their patients before the arrival of Drs. Its a fact that a patients condition may suddenly change with instances like sudden a onset of fever or vomiting, and some times the on call physician/Dr may spend about 30minutes b4 arrival.

The pharmacology knowledge should also be utilized to give either antipyretic or antiemetic as the case may be. This will make your patients feels that you are equally important in his care. But Waiting for such a long period of time will worsen d patients condition and reduce your value in d eyes of d patients .

ISN'T THIS A REASON FOR DRS TO CLAIM THE HIGHEST WORK LOAD IN HOSPITALS?
These over limitations are some of the points the Doctors use to claim the highest work load as it just happened some weeks back, because majority of the procedures are to be practiced only by the Drs even though nurses practice them but not licensed to, therefore the need for inculcating some procedures in the nursing practice will add an additional responsibilities for nurses in management of patients and wil reduce the "workload" to the Drs, so as to stop claiming d highest work load in d health care system.

WILL THESE CHANGES NOT INCREASE THE VALUE OF NURSING PROFESSION?
Actually it will, because looking into the health system, the nurse is actually the provider staying with the patient for 24hrs, therefore the need to have autonomy in carrying out some procedures especially those that are urgent should not be overemphasized. Seeing you in white uniform all the times but not giving any independent care to the patient will do nothing rather, mitigating your value drastically in the eyes of your patients and community members at large.

But by participating as aforementioned will make the patient value you and your profession at large.

In conclusion i want every reader of this article to note that in most of our universities Nurses and Drs have their lectures together, in some countries even the practical aspects are carried out together. They do rounds together. And have the respect of their colleagues and other professions.

Happy Nurses Day Everyone
