Sequel to the outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in the northern part of Nigeria, the President of National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Comrade Nurse Abdrafiu Alani Adeniji on Wednesday, 12th of April, 2017 visited the Meningitis Treatment Camp located in Muritala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sokoto.
He was accompanied by other members of National Administrative Council of NANNM, the State Administrative Council under the leadership of Comrade Shehu Abubakar, the Director of Nursing Services, and other Nursing leaders in Sokoto State. The NANNM president was received on behalf of the state government of Sokoto state by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Balarabe Shehu Kakale Shuni.
Visit to the treatment camp was preceded by a courtesy visit to His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III. During the visit to the treatment camp, drugs and medical equipment worth millions of naira was donated to the people and government of Sokoto state, this is in contribution to the effort of the state government and other donor agencies. This gesture is one of the numerous efforts (Community Service Initiative) of Nigeria Nurses in ameliorating the health needs of the community.
While addressing the press, Comrade Nurse AbdRafiu Alani Adeniji educated the public on measures to prevent reoccurrence and to curtail the spread of Meningitis. Such measures include vaccination, high standard of hygiene (personal, food and environmental), avoidance of overcrowding, early reporting and good nutrition. He reassured the public that though Cerebrospinal Meningitis is noted for its virulence, it can still be properly managed through the use of antibiotics.
The NANNM president also seized the opportunity to appreciate the Sokoto state government under the leadership of Rt. Hon Waziri Tambuwa for his efforts on health care services, human resources development for health especially Nursing education development, staff recruitment, motivation and retention.
The occasion was also used to felicitate with Umar Farouk Abubakar Wurno and to congratulate the people and government of Sokoto state on his well deserved appointment as the Registrar/ Secretary-General of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. The NANNM President equally commiserates with the people of Sokoto and Zamfara states on the demise of the former Minister of State for Health, Alh Sulaiman Bello describing him as an achiever, pacesetter and worthy ambassador of Nursing profession.
In response, the state government through the Commissioner of Health applauded this humanitarian act, commitment and professional excellence of the Nigeria nurses. He also encouraged other health professionals to emulate this laudable act.
